JUROR COMMENTARY
"This portfolio of still life paintings is a thrilling departure from the standard. Objects spill and tumble off tables creating alarm, immediacy, impending noise and a promised mess on the floor if the viewer fails to catch them in time. The disruptive activity and playful energy wake up this somber category which ordinarily depicts silent gatherings of resolute and static articles. Here the inanimate get started and come alive from an invisible cause which forever escapes capture. Each dramatic work is fresh and distinctive yet meets the criteria necessary to maintain membership in this exclusive and sensational collection." -
ARTIST STATEMENT
"In this series I work in the tenebrist style of darks and lights resulting in strong and interesting shadows. Shadows are necessary; they anchor objects in place. A complex shadow is as much a part of a composition as an object itself. By manipulating shadows I can play with your perception of a classical still life; I want objects to have implied movement. I call these paintings “kinetic”. I try to show a visual pun and often enhance them with just the right title, which is best when it’s amusing. My aim is to give you pause… and make you think and smile."
