"MY WORLD OF BIRDS"
BY
ELISABETH SOMMERVILLE

OCTOBER 2020

SPOTTED OWLS - 4-COLOUR STONE LITHOGRAPH - 17 X 18 inches - $550.00

JUROR COMMENTARY

"This irresistible portfolio grants special access and unusual proximity to majestic and amusing birds as they gather and gossip in their enchanting settings. These alluring lithographs are so rich with compelling and satisfying, visual information that minimal and gentle colour suffices.  Steady and industrious attention to every small feature creates a stunning, realistic outcome yet an inexplicable element turns this back just enough to leave a hovering, unnatural quality.  This curious and exciting conflict produces an elusive and magical impression in these admirable works of art." -- GALLERY RING

ARTIST STATEMENT
"Drawing has been my passion ever since I was a child and I have spent many, happy years drawing and printing my multi-coloured stone lithographs. The exquisite detail of a bird's feather or its nest, in a stand of birch trees, in a craggy rock formation, is a delight and challenge to draw. I enjoy observing the antics of crows and have a fascination for owls, both of which I return to again and again as subjects for my works of art." -- ELISABETH SOMMERVILLE

BIOGRAPHY
Elisabeth Sommerville graduated from the Alberta College of Art in Calgary. After a career in graphic design, she studied printmaking and joined Malaspina Printmakers Society, finding the traditional method of stone lithography was the medium that best complemented her drawing skills. Her Métis heritage has engendered Elisabeth’s close affinity with nature, clearly visible in her hand-drawn lithographs of landscapes, trees and birds. Concerned about the tenuous position of birds and wildlife whose environment is being encroached upon by human development, she is encouraged by their increasing ability to adapt to life in the city. Elisabeth is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and was honoured by being chosen for SFCA Signature Status in 2015. In May 2020, a jury of The Society of Canadian Artists chose her as an elected member. Her art is in collections in Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the U.S.A.
